Hong Kong. In Hong Kong's biggest national security case, several prominent activists were sentenced on Tuesday to up to 10 years in prison under China's sweeping security law that crushed the pro-democracy movement in Hong Kong. They were prosecuted in 2021 for their role in an unofficial 'primary' election under China's 2020 national security law. The activists are accused of attempting to paralyse Hong Kong's government and force its leader to resign, in order to gain a legislative majority that they could use to indiscriminately block the government budget.
